Socks Bulletins and FAQs

Q: Why does Socks appear to lock-up when verifying the volume structure of the startup volume?
A: This is normal behavior. Checking the startup volume requires putting the volume
into "HFS Freeze State" to prevent the reading or writing of data. Depending on the size of the volume and the number
of files, the process can take 1-10+ minutes. Progress information will not be available during the check, but normal
interface behavior will resume when the verification is complete.

Q: Why does Socks tell me that I need to "Authenticate" and ask for a password when started?
A: Socks needs to run with system-wide access privileges to function properly, this
is why it requires your administrator password. Most users on a Mac OS X operating system have these "administrator"
privileges -- if you are the sole user of your computer than you most certainly do. The password itself is known as
your "user" password. The user password is the same password that you would enter when installing other system software
or updates -- not to be confused with your registration serial number.

Q: Where is the application User's Guide?
A: Currently there is no user guide for Socks. We want to get the features and layout
more stabilized before creating a user guide. In the meantime please read the product page for
information about Socks's general layout, configurations and queues system. If you don't know what some of the tasks
actually do information can be found relatively easily using Google. We apologize for this inconvenience and realize that
a better documentation solution is necessary. It will be coming shortly. Please remember that you can
contact support with any questions you have.

Q: In Tiger or Panther my keychain won't save passwords after cleaning caches.
A: Versions 1.0 - 1.0.2 contained a bug sometimes causing the incorrect setting
of file permissions on new temporary file directories. This problem has been corrected in 1.1, and running 1.1 or later
on a problematic machine will correct the issue.

Q: Will Socks support future versions of Mac OS?
A: Yes
-
Q: How long is a registration for Socks valid?
A: A "major" version. ie. All versions 1.0 - 1.x will be free upgrades, but version
2.0 will likely incur a small upgrade fee.
