What is Pinki?

Pinki is a menu bar item that creates portable Mac OS X icon thumbnails for image files. For example, if you were to download the image files "34-234.jpg", "563-641.jpg", and "moose.png" with generic "JPEG" and "PNG" icons you would have two choices if you wished for the files to have portable thumbnail icons:

Open each image in Preview, use the File -> Copy menu, close the image, Get Info on the file in the Finder, highlight its icon in the Info box, and use the File -> Paste menu to apply its thumbnail.
Select (highlight) the three files all at once in the Finder and choose "Create Thumbnails" from the Pinki menu (or simply hit the Pinki key-combination -- by default Command-Shift-T).

There is a third option: Use the Finder to navigate to the folder where the image files are located, select the View -> View Options menu, then click the box labeled "Show Icon Preview." All of the image files in that folder will now have custom thumbnails -- however, these thumbnails will not be "portable," in that any given file's thumbnail will disappear when it is moved to another folder. This method is also non-selective, requiring all of the images in the folder to display thumbnails. Your computer will also have to generate these thumbnails every time the folder is opened (temporarily slowing down your computer). iMote was designed to counter these inconveniences.

When choosing "Create Thumbnails" Pinki will open a small window in the center of the screen with a progress bar and a picture of the image it's currently processing (each thumbnail generally only takes a fraction of a second to create).

On completion the selected files will have portable icon thumbnails that never have to be re-processed, so long as the files are not copied to a non-HFS disk (Windows, or a Linux web server). Pinki can also remove custom thumbnails (restoring icons to their generic state) as well as save thumbnails as separate 128x128 pixel .icns files.
