iMote

Leopard Users:

iMote is not yet fully compatible with Leopard. The music note menu bar item does not display, but the floater is still fully functional. The iMote preferences can be accessed using the key-combo Apple-Option-, (default key-combo). The Leopard version of iMote will be available shortly.

What is iMote?

iMote is an an amazingly useful tool for controlling basic iTunes functions (like pausing/paying the current track, skipping to the next or previous track, etc.) from any application. Say you're surfing the web with Safari (or doing anything else in any other application - except most games) and you want iTunes to skip to the next track; conventionally you would either have to right-click the iTunes dock menu and choose "Next Track," or, click the iTunes icon in the dock to open the iTunes window, and then click next-track control. If you're using iMote, however, you have two more options. First, iMote gives you the option of adding a system .menu item to your menu bar, that looks like this:

You can use this menu to perform the actions shown above, as well as to set the current track's rating, change the current plait, and adjust the Shuffle and Repeat settings for the current playlist. The second option iMote gives you over just iTunes, and the option that is intended to be use most often, is its "hot keys." (Hot keys are keyboard commands you can press to perform actions - see the FAQs for more info if you've not familiar with keyboard commands.) For example: If you want to set the currently playing track's rating to 4 stars, just hold the "Apple" + "Option" modifier keys, and tap the "4" number key. This is an extremely quick and easy way to interact with iTunes - you don't even need to touch the mouse. You can also set custom hot keys using iMote's Preferences window.

The Floater

iMote includes a floating, transparent window called the "Floater" that displays information about the track iTunes is currently playing. It displays the name of the track, the album, artist, the track's rating, and its album artwork if it has any.

By default, the Floater will automatically display when you change the current track, set a track's rating, or play from a pause state. This automatic opening of the floater window can be disabled in the iMote Preferences window. To show the floater manually, you can choose "Show Floater" from the menu bar item, or use the "Show Floater" hot key (Apple + Option + F by default).

Tricks

In addition to iMote's visible features, there are a couple of tricks you can use:

  • The Floater can be relocated on the screen by dragging it when it's open. Double-clicking it will re-center it in its default position. Note that if the "Ignore mouse clicks" option is turned on in the iMote Preferences, you will need to turn it off before you can drag the Floater.
  • Pressing the "Show/Hide Floater" hot key while the Floater is already open will cause it to close, and bring up the iTunes window. This is convenient to allow you to open iTunes quickly - you can just tap the "Show/Hide Floater" hot key twice in a row.
  • Click the stars on the Floater to set the track's rating (when the "Ignore mouse clicks" option is turned off in the iMote Preferences).
  • Since the iMote menu bar item is a system .menu plugin, you can re-arrange its position in the menu bar by holding down the Apple key and dragging it. Don't drag it off of the menu bar, though, or you will have to re-launch iMote to bring it back. (If you accidentally do drag it off, use the "Show Preferences" hot key [Apple + Option + ,] to bring up the iMote preferences window, then click "Quit iMote")
